At 107 years old, Violenta (Vi) Wade passed away on August 1st at San Leandro Hospital. She was born and raised in San Lorenzo and she, along with her brother Ignatius (Nish) Rodrigues, were San Lorenzo Historians. She was known for her great memory, her quick wit and wonderful sense of humor. She lived in the same house all her life, which was moved from Quigley Road, San Lorenzo, to Ashland Avenue, San Lorenzo in 1946.
When Vi was a young girl, most of the area was farm land. The Wade house had no indoor running water; it was hauled from the well. The house got plumbing in about 1920. As was the case in many rural areas, the Wade farm had no electricity until the nearby towns were wired. Vi held the honor of being the oldest parishioner of St. John's Catholic Church in San Lorenzo. She was Queen of the Holy Ghost Festival in 1921. Both Nish & Vi attended San Lorenzo Grammar School. Vi, whose maiden name was Rodrigues, met her husband, Thurman Wade, around 1930. They were married in 1943 and lived in the family home, granting her mother's wishes. The Wades had no children of their own, but they opened their home to their Sharon Engel and Sheryl Kautz on occasion. They considered them as adopted daughters. On February 17, 2001, Vi was awarded a pin for her 75 years membership in the Portuguese Society. Vi quit driving when she turned 100.
Husband Thurman Wade passed away in 1983. After his death, she remained alone in her 7 room house. Later on as her health declined she had help from family members and friends for shopping and cleaning. She is preceded in death by her parents, Mary & Ignatius Rodrigues; brothers Allence Rodrigues, (passed at age 95) and Nish Rodrigues (passed at age 102). Vi is survived by Sharon Engel, Sheryl Kautz, Ardis Rogers Merwin, Randy Merwin; cousins Janice Cowles, Jean Almada Rogers, Arlene Almada Lopes, Lori Ann Perry, numerous extended family members and friends. Vi will be missed by the many who treasured hearing her life stories. The funeral services will be held at Grissom's Chapel, 267 E. Lewelling Blvd, San Lorenzo; the viewing on Thursday at 5.00 p.m., August 10th; the vigil at 7:00 p.m. and the Mass at St. John's Catholic Church, 264 E. Lewelling Blvd., San Lorenzo on Friday, August 11th at 10:30 a.m. A reception will be held at Harry's Hofbrau, 14900 E. 14th Street, San Leandro, at 1:00 p.m.
