Ronald "Ron" Francis Sellman, a resident of Castro Valley, died in his home on April 29, 2018. A native of San Francisco, Sellman was born Oct. 3, 1938- the only son of Roland Francis Sellman (a former Stanford football player who once auditioned for the role of Tarzan which ultimately went to Johnny Weissmuller) and Genevieve May MacDonald (an interior decorator).
Sellman graduated from St. Ignatius High School in San Francisco, graduating with the class of 1956. He went to study Business Administration and Accounting at the University of San Francisco. In the early 1970s, he obtained a Master's Degree in Systems Administration from the University of Southern California.
On Sept. 26, 1970, he married Carolyn Rita Bongiorno at Corpus Christi Catholic Church in Oakland. They had five children.
Sellman was a faithful Catholic who always kept a rosary in his pocket. He was a fan of hamburgers, pie, and coffee. He loved watching PBS cooking programs, and in turn could heat up a mean Stouffer's lasagna. He was an enthusiast of classic cars- especially the Citroën from France because of its initial "ugliness."
He was also a critic of the Republican Party despite being one himself. He had a memorable sense of humor, had many long-time friends, and rarely refused having good times with his family and friends.
Sellman worked for several years as a computer programmer for the Naval Air Station in Alameda. He stayed working there right up to the base's closure in 1997.
Sellman also enjoyed Garfield and Beetle Bailey comic strips, eating out, Peet's Coffee, Johnny Cash, big band music, and talking history, religion, and politics. And he was a speaker of computer languages (C++. Cobol and a few more). In fact, he remembered working with computers during the days when they took up entire rooms.
He was three years old when Pearl Harbor was bombed, and remembered his parents, and other residents in the San Francisco apartment he lived in going to the roof to see if they could spot Japanese planes flying over head.
Sellman is survived by his son, John Sellman (Modesto), his wife, Angela and their daughters Joy, Rose, and son, Aiden; Andrew Sellman (Berkeley), and his son Joshua; Christopher Sellman (West Covina); and Michael Sellman (Manhattan, Kan), his wife Andrea and their son Kevin and daughter Ella.
He is preceded in death by his son, Stephen Sellman (Feb. 28, 1977 - May 11, 1977).
A visitation is scheduled for May 10, from 4 to 8 p.m., with a rosary at 7:30 p.m., at Grissom’s Chapel & Mortuary, 267 E. Lewelling Blvd., San Lorenzo, CA. A funeral mass celebrated in the Extraordinary Form of the Roman Rite is scheduled for May 11, at 11 a.m. at St. Margaret Mary's Catholic Church located at 1219 Excelsior Ave., in Oakland.
