Roger Cecil Brown, a man full of life, laughter, humor and love, courageously acknowledging his time with us here on earth was ending, passed away on May 26, 2018, at his home in San Ramon surrounded by his loving family. Roger was granted 64 years of life and lived it with enthusiasm and energy.
Always prudent regarding financial matters, Roger entered the world on December 29, 1953 in Linz, Austria allowing his parents the ability to take full advantage of claiming him for the entire tax year. His parents moved to the family home in Wisconsin where his love for the Green Bay Packers formed at a very young age. During his kindergarten year, the family moved to California where he unknowingly met the love of his life.
Diversity was Roger’s lifestyle; do what needs to be done and do it well. With this belief he had many careers from milking cows, managing restaurants, and delivering linen to the company he retired from in 2014 after 36 years, Farmer Brothers Coffee. Starting as a warehouseman in 1978, Roger worked his way up to Director of Regional Sales and became one of the youngest members of the distinguished sales board at Farmer Brothers Coffee.
Roger’s interests were also diverse. He loved working in his garden where he planted, cultivated and harvested his favorite fruits and vegetables. He enjoyed cooking, where he would enthusiastically incorporate his garden fresh veggies in his meals. A master in the kitchen, a recipe was a mere suggestion to him as he created tasty meals. He was an ingenious handyman around the house, loved fixing whatever needed fixing, never gave up on repairing and always made numerous trips to the hardware stores. He loved working with wood to create useful items.
Roger formed a love for theater in high school drama that continued throughout his life. He proudly holds SHN season ticket member #695 issued in SHN Best of Broadway’s second year. He not only enjoyed Broadway shows in San Francisco but on many visits to New York and London. Roger enjoyed music of many genres; thankfully graduating from hard rock in his early years to smooth jazz and oldies. While at home and during his travels he enjoyed music festivals and concerts. He even tolerated Martha’s love of country music and The Beatles.
The best of supporters, Roger spent countless hours on the side of a field, whether it be soccer, football, lacrosse or track, as well as in the stands of the ice hockey rink or gym and in the seats of the theater, cheering on his favorite athletes and performers from his grandkids and children to his many nieces and nephews.
Money was short early in their marriage but Roger promised Martha they would travel around the world and retire early. And so he did. His favorite destination? Everywhere! Each location held it’s own unique memory. In his younger years, it was camping boating and many trips to his “favorite” theme parks. Later in life, he was blessed to see the world … from the top of Huayna Picchu (Machu Picchu), boarding a hydrofoil across Lake Titicaca, the ruins of Tiahuanaco and Puma Punku, flying above the Nazca Lines, hiking down the Grand Canyon then rafting on the Colorado River, visiting coffee plantations in Costa Rica, various cruises and many trips to Europe to be inspired by the Vatican, mosques, basilicas, and museums, walking the streets of Ephesus, the islands in Greece, castles in Austria, hot air balloon rides over Cappadocia and soccer games in London, Manchester, Milan and Barcelona to multiple trips to the beautiful beaches of many Caribbean Islands and Mexico and soaking up the Aloha Spirit on The Hawaiian Islands. But most of all Roger loved traveling with family. Whether it was with the kids and
grandkids, brothers, sisters, nieces, nephews or Martha alone, each trip was special, each trip was held dear to his heart, each trip created memories that we will relive forever.
Roger sorrowfully leaves his heartbroken friend, lover, soulmate, sunshine and wife of 46 years, Martha S. Brown. Adoring children Chenoa B. Hopkins, Stephen J. Hopkins and Roger T. Brown; loving grandchildren Justin T. Hopkins, Joshua T. Brown, Taylor B. Hopkins, Jayden T. Brown, Reagan I.
