Michael T. Gannon

April 22, 1945 - October 21, 2025

Life Legacy

Michael Thomas Patrick Gannon, 80, of Danville, California, peacefully passed away with a smile on his face on October 21, 2025, in Walnut Creek. Mike would say, "I came alive... in '45." On April 22, 1945, he was the firstborn of three in San Francisco to Francis “Foxy” and Edith Gannon. At age 14, Michael left home to serve God at St. Joseph’s Seminary. After graduating, he earned his bachelor’s degree at St. Patrick’s Seminary and his master’s in social work at Tulane University. Volunteering as a missionary in Mexicali preceded his 27-year career as a San Francisco police officer at Park Police Station. He was called to join the SFPD Mounted Unit in Golden Gate Park for his last three years of public service. This was his dream job, which he referred to as “a walk in the park.” His excellent police training allowed him to heroically save the life of a drowning baby on his street. In the mid-eighties, Officer Gannon opened the Michael T. Gannon Insurance Agency, which operated for 40 years. Mike's love for his wife and two children led him to impressively quit smoking cold turkey on his 40th birthday. His dedication to the underprivileged youth of San Francisco was displayed through his volunteer work with the SFPD Youth Fishing Program. Mike’s passion for music brought joy to those around him, whether he directed choir, played guitar, sang for friends, or attended George Kahumoku, Jr.’s Slack-key guitar workshops in Maui for many years. Storytelling, fishing, boating on Lake Berryessa, making up nicknames, praying in Latin, and barbecuing meat to perfection are all trademark Mike Gannon talents. But nothing brought him more joy than spending quality time with his friends and family—preferably on a Hawaiian beach with a margarita and a steak. Mike will be remembered for his quick wit, uplifting persona, kind words, easygoing nature, and ability to trick you into a hug after pretending to shake your hand. His humor diffused tense situations, and his encouraging, extroverted spirit will not be forgotten.

He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Luz Gannon; his children, Kathleen (John), and Sean (Lauren); six grandchildren who adored Grandpa … Johnny, J.J., Kaleb, Kyrie, River, and Jedy; and his sister, Maureen (Elliot). Mike was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Dennis. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the SFPD Widows & Orphans Program at sfwidowsandorphans.org/make-a-donation Mike's legacy of love, service, humor, and joy continues to live on through all who crossed his
path. As we mourn his passing, we also thank God for Mike’s glorious homecoming.

"Well done, good and faithful servant… Enter into the joy of your master!" — Matthew 25:23
