John Edward Wedemeyer, 61 years old, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his family and friends on July 18, 2016 after a long struggle with cancer. John was born on June 12, 1955 in New Haven, Connecticut. He was a long time resident of Fremont, CA (41 years). As an adult living with developmental disabilities, he was never one to let things slow him down. Even as getting around became increasingly difficult, he continued to attend day programs at Castro Valley Adult & Career Education and Creative Growth in Oakland, CA. John would wake up every day at 5 A.M. and be ready to catch his bus by 6 A.M. to start his long commute to Castro Valley or Oakland. John relied mostly on BART and AC transit to get around. Prior to this time, John was a long time resident of Serra Residential Center in Fremont CA. John was also an accomplished artist, generating an amazing collection of drawings and sculpture that span a lifetime of creative energy and inspiration. John also loved to travel. As a world traveler he would often share many stories and personal experiences, from getting lost in Budapest, sailing down the Amazon, drifting through the Panama Canal. He had an avid love and interest in airplanes, heavy construction equipment, just about any car, and of course Legos and more Legos. A great story teller at school and an avid conversationalist among friends, John could always be counted on at family gatherings to bring delightful humor and laughter to all with his probing questions and inquiries. He will be greatly missed, always loved and never forgotten.
John is preceded by his father, Dr. William Wedemeyer, longtime resident of Lafayette, CA. He is survived by his loving mother, Midori Wedemeyer; his older sister, Dorothy Kusumoto, her husband Susumu Kusumoto, and their daughter, Aya Kusumoto; his younger sister, Dr.
Elizabeth (Betsy) Wedemeyer, and her husband, John Gunther-Mohr and their sons, Paul and Mark Gunther-Mohr; his older brother, Robert (Bob) Wedemeyer and his wife, Melinda, and their two daughters , Cassandra ( Cassie) and Annalise (Lise) Wedemeyer; long-time family friend, Margaret (Peg) Darby; and his roommate and best friend of many years, Deo Dat.
During the course of his life, John was watched over by his devoted caregivers, Manjit Bhullar of Positive Adult Transitions, Sal Bhullar, Namir Singh, Manjit Kaur, and more recently, Alfaz Edwards. We would like to thank his nurse, Thuy Le of Pathways Hospice for giving him the best care possible and allowing him to make personal decisions up until the end. A memorial gathering is planned for July 29th, 2016, at 10:00 A.M.; Grissom’s funeral home, 267 East Lewelling Road, San Lorenzo, CA.
