Life Legacy

Joan Mardell (Mantor) Miller, 80, passed away at her home in San Ramon, California on Friday, November 18, 2022 two weeks short of her 81st birthday. Mourning her loss are the love of her life and husband of fifty years, Rodney Miller, her son Aaron (Claudine) Miller, her daughter Rebecca (Scott) Wingerd and her grandchildren, Emily Wingerd, Ian Miller and Devin Miller.

Joanie was born in Santa Ana, California on December 1, 1941. A true California girl, Joan grew up in Orange, CA and attended Orange High School graduating in 1960. In 1971, while residing in Orange, Joanie met Rodney and they were married less than a year later in Las Vegas. Joanie and Rodney welcomed their son in 1973 and their daughter in 1976. She was a fierce and loving advocate for her children who were so fortunate to have her stay home during their formative years.

In 1983, the Miller family moved up to San Ramon from Orange County, California. Joanie absolutely loved the city of San Ramon and served as a crossing guard for ten years. She crossed children for Twin Creeks Elementary School, from 1988 through 1995, and Neil Armstrong Elementary School, from 1999 through 2002. She also enjoyed her interactions with the older students from Pine Valley Intermediate and California High School. She adored the children she kept safe and they cherished her in return. She knew most everyone by their names and treated all with respect.

Joanie was an avid painter, reader and adventurer. A creative artist, Joanie enjoyed painting sceneries on just about any kind of medium, including wood, saw blades, frying pans, old irons, and slate tiles. She loved reading murder mystery novels and thoroughly enjoyed watching true crime television shows. Later in life, Joanie was able to take several trips abroad visiting Australia, including Tasmania, England and Wales.

Joanie was preceded in death by her parents, Mary (Abbott) DeCroix, Paul DeCroix and her younger brother, Richard Mantor. In addition to her immediate family, Joanie leaves behind her sister Sharon (Phil) Otellio and several cousins, nephews and nieces.

Memorial service to be determined at a later date.
