Celebrating the Life of Helen Avery: 1933–2025
Helen Avery, a woman defined by her perseverance, integrity, and vibrant passions, passed away peacefully on November 8, 2025, in Manteca, California, at the age of 92. She was a deeply cherished wife, sister, grandmother, and friend whose life created a legacy of beauty, lively debate, and warm hospitality.
Born on August 6, 1933, in San Francisco, California, Helen spent her early years in Redwood City. She later embarked on a professional career at AT&T, where fate introduced her to her beloved husband, Walter Avery. Together, they shared a rich life filled with travels across Europe, Asia, and most notably, the stunning landscapes of Italy. They established their long-time home in San Lorenzo.
Helen possessed a lively spirit and a distinct flair for the beautiful things in life. She was renowned for her impeccable fashion sense and her breathtaking, meticulously tended rose garden—a true source of pride and joy. Her home became a landmark during the holidays, known for its exquisite, extensive decorations.
In her younger years, Helen was a dedicated crochet enthusiast, often seen walking home from BART in unique, colorful, handmade outfits. She found pleasure in reading, playing the piano, and caring for her beloved Persian cats and fine collectables.
A sharp and engaging conversationalist, Helen was admired for her passion for debating a wide range of topics, including nutrition, history, religion, and politics. Her ultimate joy, however, was sharing her passions with others, evident in the love and care she poured into hosting memorable garden parties and holiday get-togethers for family and friends.
Helen's loving spirit lives on in her family. She is survived by her brother, Jim Holms; her step-son, Warren Avery; her granddaughter, Michelle Avery; and her grandson, Joseph Avery. She was also a proud great-grandmother to Trenton and Kardon Avery, and Autumm and Tiffany Schultz.
A memorial service will be held to honor Helen’s life at 1:00 PM on Friday, November 14, 2025, at Grissom's Chapel & Mortuary Inc. in San Lorenzo, California.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made in Helen's name to an Animal Shelter of your choice, a tribute to her great love for cats.
