On April 2, 2022, Gary Hess passed away at the age of 75 at home in San Leandro, California. In recent years, his battle with various medical issues showed his ability to learn the meaning of family.
As a child, Gary wanted to become a pharmacist. However, upon graduating from Arroyo High School in San Lorenzo, he entered the workforce and became a three-color offset pressman for International Paper. Twenty years later, Gary changed careers and became a custodian for St. Barnabas School in Alameda before retiring as Head Custodian at the San Lorenzo Adult School. Before retiring, he was involved with San Lorenzo USD’s maintenance crew, an experience during which he forged long-lasting friendships while painting, repairing, and upgrading several school facilities. Overall, Gary was well-liked by his coworkers and established enduring friendships.
Later, he met Colleen Boyd and married—while having a son, Steven. Although the marriage ended, Gary had a family that supported him during every step in life and enjoyed working on the computer, playing cards, discussing science fiction, and joking around. Also, he enjoyed developing his Coca Cola bottle collection, spending time with his beloved collie (Ribsy), listening to music, watching football and anything involving Star Trek, and collecting rare gold and silver coins.
He is survived by his ex-wife, Colleen Hess, and his son, Steven Hess.
His graveside ceremony will remain private; however, all are welcome to share their memories at https://www.mykeeper.com/profile/GaryHess/.
