Donald “Don” Collopy, a proud third generation San Franciscan, devoted family man and lifelong champion of working people, passed away surrounded by loved ones on June 5th. Born on January 9, 1944, in San Francisco, Don grew up with his older brother Jim and younger sister Patricia.
He attended St. Thomas the Apostle Grammar School, began high school at St. Ignatius College Preparatory, and graduated from George Washington High School in 1962 before continuing his education at San Francisco City College.
Don began his career in the Safeway produce department and later joined Retail Clerks Union Local 648, representing workers across San Francisco’s grocery stores. Over 28 years, he rose to Secretary Treasurer, earning deep respect for his fairness, humor, and unwavering advocacy.
For 60 years, Don was married to the love of his life, Paula (Ranieri) Collopy. Together they raised two sons, Marc and Matt, and built a family defined by loyalty and laughter. Don was immensely proud of his six grandchildren—Hailey, Carli, Tyler, Kyle, Connor, and Ryan—and his daughters in law, Karen and Shelly.
Don lived a life rooted in service, friendship, and family. He had a gift for making people feel welcome, a wit that could light up any room, and a heart that never stopped giving. His legacy lives on in the countless lives he touched across San Francisco, Danville, and beyond.
He will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
