Anne Inez Young-Hughes, 86 years of age, passed away during peaceful slumber on the morning of Friday, April 27, 2018 in Fremont, California. Annie Inez Harrison was born on November 14, 1931 to the parents of Arthur and Ella E. Harrison in Los Angeles, California the second oldest of six siblings. Anne was petite, mighty and athletically inclined. She graduated from David Starr Jordan High School and attended Los Angeles City College. Soon thereafter while working as a legal secretary, she met and married Herbert J. Young in Los Angeles, California. To this union was born a son, Michael Joseph and a daughter, Patrice Rhondelle.
With a five-octave vocal range, Anne loved to sing, sing, and sing! Her passion evolved into a pure love of the jazz genre. Her career spanned the decades with an appearance on the Nat King Cole show in the 50s, various television specials in the U.S. and Tokyo, Japan where she performed a benefit concert with an 80 member jazz symphony orchestra. She toured Vietnam with the USO during the early 70s and continued traveling extensively throughout other far eastern locales including Sydney, Australia. Anne was also featured in many major publications and magazine articles during her career and performed with numerous jazz greats like Jimmy Smith, Milt Jackson, Count Basie Orchestra, just to name a few. Anne eventually created her own record label: Arelan Records – for distribution of her album and recordings.
In the late 80s, the touring days were over and she decided to return to Los Angeles, California where in later years, she met and married Mr. Charles A. Hughes (ret. US Army). They resided happily in Los Angeles, California where he preceded her in death in 1990. Anne is survived by her sister, Ernestine Moore, a brother Harry Harrison, her son Michael Young, her daughter Patrice Payne, three grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and a multitude of friends and admirers.
There will be a Celebration of Life for Anne on Tuesday, May 8, 2018, at 1:00 P.M. at Grissom's Chapel & Mortuary, 267 E. Lewelling Blvd., San Lorenzo, CA.
