Alberta Reed

September 13, 1926 - August 29, 2021

Life Legacy

Alberta Reed was born on September 13, 1926 in Monroe, Louisiana to the union of Oliver and Eliza Scott. She grew up with her six siblings: Zubia, Esevena, Louise, Fred, and Alonzo.

On September 18, 1943 she married her first love Nathaniel Reed in New Orleans, Louisiana. In 1944 they moved to Oakland, California where they joined Union Baptist Church under the leadership of Pastor E.D. Nation, Jr. Alberta loved God, singing in the church choir, Bible study, and eventually became one of the Mothers of the church.

Alberta was a seamstress and wife but her passion was in home care and caring for those who couldn’t care for themselves, up until 2010 when she had her first stroke. Alberta enjoyed her time at Center for Elder’s Independence at Eastmont where she was able to meet new people and do rehab.

Alberta was a devoted member of Union Baptist Church until she fell ill. She always prayed, called on God, and hummed her favorite church songs – one of which was “You Gotta Move” by Fred McDowell.

Alberta Reed was preceded in death by her parents Oliver and Eliza Scott and her siblings Zubia, Esevena, Louise and Fred.

Alberta’s home going leaves to cherish both her memory and to celebrate her transition the following: brother Alonzo Emmerson; son Leon Reed; daughter-in-law Ester Reed; grandchildren Rodney and Cynthia Reed; granddaughter/goddaughter Josephine (Monica) McCray; and a host of great grandchildren, cousins, nieces and nephews. She will be greatly missed.
